We would like to announce you about the new regulations verified gross mass of all containers.
On July 1, 2016, a new amendment tot he Safety of Sea (SOLAS) will require shippers to provide the carriers with a verified gross mass (VGM) for each container before the carrier has submitted their stowage plan.
What is SOLAS
The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is an international maritime safety treaty. It ensures that ships flagged by signatory States comply with minimum safety standard in construction, equipment and operation. The SOLAS Convention in its successive forms is generally regarded as the most important of all international treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships.
What is VGM
Verified gross mass means the weight of each packed container can be proven. This weight is determined by adding the weight of all packages and cargo items in the container, plus the mass of pallets, all packing and securing material, and the tare weight of the container. Essentially, the VGM is the total weight of each package that will be lifted aboard the vessel.
What kind of effect does this have for the clients
This means we need to receive from all of our clients a verified gross mass of each shipment. This weight will be mentioned on the bill of lading and manifest If clients don’t have the verified gross mass available, we can assist them by weighing the shipments in our warehouse. Please take note that the shipper mentioned on the bill of lading will be always responsible for the VGM
What will Venix Logix do
We will weigh all containers after loading at our warehouse to verify the weight of the container and we will inform the carrier the final VGM of the container.
Some transhipment ports announced a regulation that the authorities requires a weigh certificate per shipment If there exist any difference on the VGM weight of your shipment and manifested weight mentioned on the Bill of lading, can be result in that container would be blocked and/or extra costs can be occurred.
Costs for weighing the container or an individual shipment will be advised in a later stadium. Venix will start with the VGM on June 1, 2016 as testing month. If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
